A wonderful character study of a young heartbroken artistic soul, as he deals with the aftermath of being dumped by a girlfriend, develops insomnia due to it, takes a job at a supermarket working the night-shift, and passes time (or actually "stops time") ruminating about his childhood, art/beauty/nudity.

At first I thought the movie might get annoying with the fairly realistic obsessing of an ex and self-loathing...but the setting of the film does well to stage forth the introspective idea of "stopping time" and reminiscing on the past, of being the silent observer in the plain and mundane workplace of a supermarket. Lots of amusing stories are told here involving childhood, the quirky co-workers of the grocery store, nudity and art...and it ends with a budding romance.

It's very well done indie British flick, somewhat dreary but never overly depressing or boring...making it good light entertainment. As a result my only critique might be that the film could've been a little more profound, coupled also with the female actresses/talent...they were all model quality, painting a very unrealistic picture of the female form and constrains this piece more strictly to the fantasy world of "motion pictures"...granted Emilia Fox, who did a decent job in her supporting role as the night-shift clerk and served as the ultimate love interest for the protagonist, while not really quite the "hot model" as many others in the film were, she was still very attractive and thin. ...not that I'm complaining (except for the strippers, the women were all gorgeous), but the addition of more "realistic" women, while probably being a turn off for many (me included), might've turned this 4 star movie into a 5 star indie film in my mind.

this movie is really werid but really buetful in it's starngness. it a very visal movie with effect to die for as far as the acting and the story that seem to be put on the back brun to the effects and the pure dreamness of what we see.

I really enjoyed Cashback, i think it is an original idea and its all done really well on what seems like a small British budget. The acting is good and the cast seem to all pull their weight. Based on Sean Ellis' short movie the direction is supurb and i look forward to Ellis following this up with sum more strong material.

Non mi ha fatto impazzire, forse perchè per i film troppo romantici ho un pò l'avversione. Lietofine un pò scontato e una comicinità che non mi ha esaltato.

"Once upon a time, I wanted to know what love was. Love is there if you want it to be. You just have to see that it's wrapped in beauty and hidden away in between the seconds of your life. If you don't stop for a minute, you might miss it"

EVERYTHING IS GREAT IN THIS MOVIE EXCEPT THE LAST 15 MINUTES WHICH ISN'T BAD BUT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER AND LESS CLICHE

Cashback is a deliciously hilarious, fun and beautiful romantic and idealistic British modern film. It tells so much about life, things that are always there but we refuse to see or ignore frequently. The comedy is extremely funny and the characters are unique and couldn't be better. Extremelly recommended viewing.

    P.D. Beautiful ending.

I always thought Sean Biggerstaff was highly underused in Harry Potter. It's nice to see him as he should be, a leading man. And what a wonderful leading man he is, heartfelt and honest and funny and handsome. A movie like this, in the wrong hands, could come off as misogynistic. Fortunately, Biggerstaff, under terrific direction, portrays awe and wonder of women. It made bold and honst statements about he nature of relationships with a fun time twist. I've always been a fan of offbeat romances like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and this felt a lot like that. I would've liked to see a little less fluff, but for the most part, well done. Fantastic camerawork added to a quirkily sweet story make this a treasure.

Smart, clever, and funny. Attempts and successfully describes the emotions of men, and their love for womens' bodies as a form of art.

It's easier to write a review on a movie you don't like than on a movie you do, but I'll give it a try anyway.
Cashback really surprised me, it's actually a love story, but Sean Ellis (the writer and director) found a way around it (through the soundtrack and his way of filming) without making you puke.
After seeing Superbad this one was kind of a relief (don't get me wrong, that movie was very entertaining:)
If you've seen both, you know what I mean (let's say Superbad targeted a more masculine audience :p)
Did I mention that it was very funny as well? For fans of Eternal Sunshine, American Beauty and Ghost World, you're gonna love this!!

It is really really cute. Sean is more than beautiful, the script is really great at some points and there are some things about the direction that I really liked. The full movie is quite funny and intresting, all the stop time thing it's great, how he look for beauty all around him, I loved that. What I thought was hillarious was the Kung-Fu friend, he is just very funny, I loved him. I really really liked this movie, a one time watch film, but really great.

After looking into this film a bit I think I'll pass. It does look somewhat interesting though. I wish we had a category between "I want to see it" and "not interested."

I watched the 2004 short film a while back and really enjoyed it, so I was more than looking forward to the feature length film, and I'm pleased to say it passed my expectations.

This film is a study of the human mind, and how it deals with living an average life; however, what it does so brilliantly is highlight the hidden depth within working a dead end job for minimum pay.

With some astonishing cinematography, Sean Ellis is able to make a typical Sainsbury's supermarket look like an example of inspired modern-day architecture. Never did I think, I'd genuinely feel the urge to hand in an application form for my local Sainsbury's; not until I saw this film.

Ben Willis is fantastic. His subdued performance, with near philosophical narration embodies the life of an insomniac perfectly; and I should know, being one myself. Willis draws you in instantly, and you don't want to leave his presence, by the end you feel you've made a close friend.

Apart from quite a noticible change in direction part way through, and a few moral quips, I find it hard to fault Cashback. I feel this film was made for people like me, and I can't wait to watch it again and again. What's even better, is that I now have yet another British director to get overly excited about. I can't wait to see what Ellis' future holds.

I recommend Cashback to anyone who has worked in a supermarket, gone through a difficult break-up, or suffered from severe insomnia. To be honest I recommend it to anyone who is truly passionate about film.

Beautiful film. A wee bit melodramatic and naive with its opinions of love, but a beautiful flick none the less.

    Directed by: Sean Ellis.
Starring: Sean Biggerstaff, Emilia Fox, Michelle Ryan, Shaun Evans.

<< "I read once about a woman whose secret fantasy was to have an affair with an artist. She thought he would really see her. He would see every curve, every line, every indentation and love them because they were part of the beauty that made her unique." >>

The story follows Ben, a young man who is rather artistic and imaginative. When he has a horrible breakup with his girlfriend, it really affects him, he starts to get insomnia, can't stop thinking about her and soon decides to take a night shift at a supermarket, to help fill in the extra time he has gained...but soon he imagination starts to get going and he starts to bring out the beauty in the things around him.

This film just came as such a shock, because I seriously did not know what to expect. The cover appeals as a tad erotic and the synopsis makes it sound like the 'events' of the late shift that these characters do was to be some erotic tale of what to do to overcome boredom...I'm glad to have that surprise of more.

Its really a film I could look up to in some aspects. An independent filmmaker who had the luck and the skill to have won many short film awards for what was originally a short film , he seemed to show such a solid dedication to getting it made into a feature and this little gem comes right out of nowhere, with full force behind it from everyone involved, it really inspires me as a filmmaker.

Not everyone will enjoy this film, some may hate the central character, which isn't a good start for any film, some might find it too whimsy and pretentious and also think that what the main character does in his 'imaginative' times is cheap, but for others, like me, you will be gripped from the first frame and everything that follows is simply just beauty.

The film starts as you would expect, they introduce the main character. The basics of him start to flow slowly but of course we still don't know who he truly is, but Sean Ellis behind the camera really grips you no matter what, for many reasons of course, but the main one I saw, in both his direction and screenplay...is assurance. The beautiful score is melding perfectly with the opening frames and some of the artistic and creative choices are really amazing and show a nice visual touch (such brilliantly staged unbroken shots that blended so well) and the cinematography is just outstanding...and from there the film kicks into gear.

The characters are soon introduced when the main character starts his new job, we see more of who he really is and get a brief look at others, but to me, this is where it really got me. Take yourself away from the fantasy elements on the surface and wrap yourself around the undertones that beat nicely in the film, the characters are so full of life and are given such great dialogue, you really grip onto what and who they are and who they become throughout the film and we accept them because of such a nice touch put into them thanks to the team involved. What I especially gripped with the most was the central love story between the two main characters. Both with particularly different views...one has all the time in the world available to him and simply steps back, takes his time and admires the beauty in the people around, while the other can't help but see how little time she might have if she doesn't pursue her dreams, yet theres such a nice little connection underneath them both and thanks to some great chemistry between the leads, it works really well.

The acting is pretty damn good. The sub-characters ain't the focus of the picture and are relatively simple, but the actors given to them do extremely well. Sean Biggerstaff is certainly stepping into bigger roles well and he has the right stance to attack them, good to see that I didn't think of his Harry Potter role...but the real surprise for me was Emilia Fox. Only seeing her in brief roles in other films, this performance really drew me in and added the perfect depth needed for this characters beauty, her eyes really do the work and of course she is beautiful as it is.

Cashback really surprised me. An independent film with an assured vision from its director/writer, nicely balancing fantasy, comedy and a love story, with enough creativity (and amazing cinematography) to boot. Light, but thoughtful.

''I've always wanted to meet a painter.''

    ''Why?''

''I think it might have something to do with their ability to see beauty in everything.''

After a painful breakup, Ben develops insomnia. To kill time, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket, where his artistic imagination runs wild.

    Sean Biggerstaff: Ben Willis

    Emilia Fox: Sharon Pintey

Cashback is an artistic film, like its main character Ben, that I have seen recently. It has qualities that blend together and result in unrivaled beauty and imagination.

The Director Sean Ellis usually delivers comedic romances, something which I'm relatively unphased by, but Cashback right from the off showed me something deeper, something bordering on a lesson in life, in love and the failed attempt only to be re-blossomed anew with a new chance. Sequences can be dreamy and surreal and as Ben suffers from insomnia from his heartbreak we see that in his new found job he can stop time to study one thing that he loves above all else. That thing in perspective being the female anatomy, not for it's lustful qualities to any typical man but for its proportionate shapely perfection form that is defined above all else.

Some useful flashback sequences of Ben as a boy help explain why he loves the female body so much, the scene when he sees the beautiful body of a Swedish Student naked on her way back to her room. Then as a curious mesmerized young boy would knocks on her door to return her left behind underwear, then he see's all, his view complete. The supple ripely formed breasts and perfect bottom effortlessly displayed that hell even makes me appreciate a goddess of a woman in all her splendor. To capture that on paper or in any sense, to possess that even, is nothing short of perfection.

Other things we get from Cashback is an array of characters doing some comical stuff in the work place, such as a salami BJ or a maddened race between Barry Brickman and Matt Stevens. Even the addition of a Kung fu Brian or the block headed manager was amusing. This really does make you feel like you're in Sainsburys.

Sean Biggerstaff who I recall in Philosophers Stone really shines as the lead being dreamy and suffering from insomnia.
Emilia Fox who works on the Checkouts, also impresses proving she does pick some very interesting choices in her films.
Michelle Ryan as the volatile Ex was very good also even though her part was a fine example of how obsessed we can be or how hard it is to let go after you have had a break up.

Ellis has crafted and created a film of such grandeur and creativeness that ends up being artistic, stylish and untouchable, the fact that he has made Cashback that is both perfect Art-House material and universal is a beacon to his talent and maturity funneled into vision.

Love is unpredictable like a snowflake and in this sense Cashback throws an unusual tale of love lost and love found again, that really does indeed show love does let you keep the change.

The first thing that stands out when watching this film is that the writer didn't do his research on insomnia. Which is pretty lame, considering that the story basically revolves around it. And so from the beginning it's hard to buy into. The funnier moments of the movie do just enough to keep your attention though, and despite being unbelievable and unintelligent, the script wasn't terrible. The acting wasn't great either, but it didn't make me dislike the film. The one thing that I did enjoy was the protagonist's notion that he stopped time and the themes surrounding that. There's just not that much good or bad to say about this film. You won't hate it, but I'm not sure you'll like it either.
