Plot: A wealthy teen (Yelchin) goes to a new public high school and ingratiates himself into its social fabric by using his charm to become the school's resident "psychiatrist."
Charlie Bartlett is a good movie, nothing spectacular but it fulfilled my expectations very well. It is a very well written comedy with the perfect amount of drama. It is funny but not because its full of jokes or gags, the humor of this movie is a consequence of the situations in it. The plot about a wealthy teen (Yelchin) goes to a new public high school and ingratiates himself into its social fabric by using his charm to become the school's resident "psychiatrist" is good, its like a glimpse of how teenagers live nowadays. The cast composed entirely by young actors with the exception of Downey Jr. is good and they acted well. Robert Downey was good, Anton Yelchin in the role of Charlie, his performance was great. He was a excellent complement for Downey Jr. The rest of the cast like Kat Dennings and Hope Davis were a great support for the movie. In conclusion, this is an entertaining movie that is worthy just to watch Downey Jr. and Yelchin acting together.
This movie was sweet! I love how Charlie just wants to help all the screwed up teens. Plus it was funny. Great movie.
i enjoy the movie regardless of what i do or do not understand about teens life in USA.. although in general teenagers are going through the same phase bla bla, but, it depends heavily on the culture, the context etc. the thing is i don't know if it's the 'right' movie or not portraying the life of American teenagers..
but, i kind of like the refreshingly acted character of Charlie carried out by Anton Yelchin, you could see that how people demanded him to act like an adult although the truth is he is just a f*ckin kid trying to take care of every messed up thing surrounding him.. treated appropriately according your age is nice, but, sometimes grow up in your own way is kind of fun as well..
Robert Downey Jr.. playing an alcoholic principal.. there's nothing new under the sun, really.. but, the old thing proves it is still amazing.. and Hope Davis also gives a great performance.. i love her character here.. she's fragile, but, also clueless, so you can't fully blame her anyway, because it's not ignorance you get from her.. it's merely the act of not knowing..
sky is the limit, eh?
Greatly written story where a nobody kid becomes popular and tries to solve teen problems that real teens face. ... Robert Downey Jr. was perfect for his role, and Anton Yelchin could be on his way to real life popularity.
Charlie Bartlett: "This place sucks. But I just worry that one day we're gonna look back at high school and wish we'd done something different."
The greatest 97 minutes of my life...
I'm so related to the main character in so many ways that seeing this (for the third time now) with my mom getting pissed off everytime Hope Davis appeared on screen (because she KNOWS just how similar we are to them in real life) is both weird, unconfortable and extremely hilarious.
I'm absolutely madly in love with this movie.

Despite its plot- of a self-appointed student psychiatrist working out of a boy's toilet-turned-makeshift office in a public school somewhere in contemporary exurbia- this film fails to involve the viewer emotionally. You know almost precisely when you are suppose to laugh & tear-up but for some reason you don't- at least not voluntarily. Anton Yelchin, to his credit, does a nice enough job: being naughty and lovable all at once; Robert Downey Jr. is good and upstages everybody else. But any insight this film offers into the Teenage Mind is at best, skin-deep.
I can't think of the last movie I enjoyed this much. What a satisfying watch, all the way through. Anton Yelchin plays Charlie with charm and distinctive personality, and Robert Downey Jr. is thoroughly compelling in his role as the principal. The movie unfolds in a way that makes complete sense every step of the way. The dialogue is clever and the humor quiet but entertaining. Definitely a great watch.
This movie is refreshingly funny. It's been awhile since a movie has made me laugh like this one did.
I've been waiting FOREVER to see this movie. My video store didn't have it and the RedBox didn't have it. But no fear I finally saw it and now I'm SO glad I did.
Charlie Bartlett is a similar movie to Juno in my opinion. It takes real people and puts them into real issues. Charlie Bartlett is so relative in so many ways. It's a great teen movie. YAY Charlie Bartlett.
Robert Downey Jr is exceptional (I think I've said that before). I sort of expected him to carry the movie. Each actor carried his or her own weight. Good story; good messages; and fun to watch besides.
Much like Juno, this is a great "teen angst" flick. Anton Yelchin does a great job for his first big role, and Robert Downey Jr. is good at playing a douschebag, which isn't surprising to say the least. The screenwriting and directing were very well done, and just the whole feel of the movie is just what some of us high schoolers go through. Overall, it was a great movie that anyone needs to see.
Unsurprising wit accompanied by wisdom you'd extract from any pill-popping, dysfunction-facilitating, self-obsessing American family. It's a tired storyline. Few nice moments. Not even RDJ would make me want a second viewing.
Charlie Bartlett was a great movie. I think that it's mostly only for teenagers. I saw this with an adult and he didn't enjoy it and neither did any other of the adults in the theatre. I thought that some scenes were very funny and others they tried to hard to make funny. It had great meaning and some good messages. The first half hour was pretty slow moving and boring for the most part. When it kicked up it got really good and was enjoyable. I thought that the acting was very well. Also Anton Yelkin is going to be a great actor I think. He also played the part of Charlie Bartlett very well and was the best person for the part. Robert Downey Jr. was another great actor for this movie. He made the movie ten times better than what it would have been if he hadn't been in it. All and all this was a great comedy with some good messages. So if you are a teenager go and see this movie I think you will enjoy it a lot.
one of the best movies ive ever seen, i loved these characters and their problems. really funny and really great.
An entertaining flick that has a witty and clever script, a talented cast, delightful quirky characters and hilarious quips and antics. Anton Yelchin delivers an excellent performance and is perfectly casted in the title role of Charlie Bartlett.
I loved this movie, It was fantastic!!! original and funny!!! The acting was great and the story was unique... This movie is one of the best ive seen in days !!! Nice. "Popularity Is A State OF Mind!!!"
I wish we had a Charlie at my school. Charlie doses out meds and psychobabble to his classmates, and learns a few lessons
At last! A smart teen comedy! The concept and the storyline are highly interesting, the humor is subtle (for instance, the entire movie has to do with illegally-distributed medication and during a scene the leading actor is wearing a T-shirt that reads "People like YOU are the reason people like ME need medication")
Some scenes are wonderful (the longest scene in the limouzine, the scenes between Charlie and his principal in Charlie's house and in the pool)
Anton Yelchin is unbelievably good and has earned my full respect. During the film he speaks english with 3 or 4 different accents and he's equally great in all of them. He's also amazing in the scenes where he is shown visiting different psychiatrists and expaining different symptoms to conditions he doesn't have. Yelchin is a fresh breath of air. Great acting job also by Robert Downey Jr. who is flawless in his every performance and by Hope Davis who plays the seemingly uncaring mother. Tyler Hilton and Kat Dennings didn't do an equally great job -they were simply mediocre.
All in all, a great, funny, light-hearted comedy that is easily likable and watchable.
However, it is generally far-fetched and unreal, since school life could never be like that. Someone who is illegally distributing prescrition drugs and is responsible for a suicide attempt faces crime charges, he doesn't just change schools. Also, someone who is responsible for the bullying and beating of others faces some expalsion time, not just walk around free or suddenly have a change heart.
I have yet to totally finish it but I really like it I was at the tail end and thought it was a whole lot better than I thought it would be
From the trailers I expected something Ferris Bueller-esque. Not quite what I got but I actually really liked this movie.
All about a kid growing up and learning how to deal with being different. A pretty fun flick that touches on some heavy issues but does not go too deep into them to take you away from the humor.
Anton Yelchin reminds me of the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka in this movie, but moreso, he has some great moments. The movie was blah. 4 stars for "Yankee Doodle".
this movie is not as good as i thought,,it had some funny moments, but not that funny, and charlie is a nice guy,the story was pretty ok,anyway,it's a nice movie
i really liked this film. it is more than just a teen comedy. it makes you think about the things in life. and the main character is cute ;d
