Plot: The trials and tribulations of a New Jersey convenience store clerk and his best friend, a video store employee.
Great movie!! Love the independence of the film. Kevin Smith truly has a film makers heart!! The fact it's poorly shot and cheap works to its advantage! Thank you Kevin Smith for having giant balls!!
Clerks is one of those movies everyone knows everything about even before they've seen it. The most fascinating aspect is probably the back-story: Kevin Smith sold his comic-book collection to finance it, shot it in the convenience store where he was working at the time, and cast his school friends in the various roles (two of them wound up playing three or four characters each). The film became a huge hit at Sundance, and is now widely (and justly) considered one of the best independent movies of all time.
The plot is quite easy to sum up: nothing happens. It's just a "regular" day in the lives of a few people working in or outside a Quick Stop convenience store. The fun starts immediately, as Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) is asked to replace a sick colleague. This upsets him a lot, since it's supposed to be his day off ("You know what the worst part is? I'm not even supposed to BE here today!"). So now he has to serve a bunch of rather annoying or excessively weird people, with occasional help from his friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson), who "works" in the video store next to Quick Stop. Together, they discuss things like hermaphroditic porn or, Tarantino-style, which Star Wars sequel is better (Jedi or Empire?), and also try to find ways of not working, or at least make the day less boring (as Randal puts it:"This job would be great if it wasn't for the f**king customers"). Between these discussions, they also interact with Dante's present girlfriend Veronica (whose sex life causes heated debates) and ex Caitlin, who's apparently engaged to some Asian design major. And let's not forget Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith himself), two drug dealers consistently located outside the store.
Smith uses these characters to reference his favorite movies (the previously mentioned Star Wars, as well as Jaws and Indiana Jones) and talk about any subject in the filthiest way imaginable. Some incredibly outrageous stuff is mentioned ("jizz moppers", necrophilia, "snowballing"), but unlike John Waters, he never shows the events discussed by Dante, Randal et al. Everything occurs, or has occurred, off-screen, so all we get to do is have a good laugh, because no matter how crude it gets (the film is rated R for "Extensive Use Of Extremely Explicit Sex-Related Dialogue"), Smith's writing remains genuinely funny. Randal, in particular, steals every scene with his existential musings ("I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class. Especially since I rule.") or very politically incorrect antics (the top? Reading a list of pornographic flicks in front of a mother and her baby).
If you haven't seen it yet, do it, and fast: Clerks fully deserves its cult status. It has priceless dialogue, wisecracking characters and loads of swearing. What else can you ask for?
a movie that makes me think of my life id say....im a bit like randell and a bit like dante "im not even spost to be here today!" thats me and when it comes to just fucking with people thats the randell in me and if you ever worked in a store like this....you truly know how theses guys feel....
This was one of the first movies I rented from Netflix. (Useless tidbit.) I remember I was upset because I thought they sent me a messed up movie. (I was not aware that it was black/white.)
:]
I liked it a lot, but it is rather dated. I saw this after seeing at least 3 other Kevin Smith films too, so the beginnings of Jay and Silent Bob didn't really fly well with me. The movie was great though. It's not my favorite Kevin Smith film, but it did have a lot of really good shit.
Kevin Smith's debut feature, made on the lowest of budgets, is made artistically in black-and-white and is dependant on dialogue and plot to create good humour. The relationship between clerks Dante and Randall is another strength and the support characters Jay & Silent Bob provide excellent comedy also.
Pros: Some excellent dialogue, a superb last act, and a meandering "day-in-the-life" type story that I have a weakness for.
Cons: Some horrible dialogue, some absolutely atrocious "acting", it sometimes feels more like a film project than a full movie.
I think my score of Clerks may go up after a few more viewings. It has potential.
I like Kevin Smith and the way he looks at things. I share his sarcasm and cynicism. This film supports my paranoia of how much "those other people" hate "us other people". LOL
on the one hand, this film is filled with insightful and brilliant social commentary. on all the other hands, there are many things about this movie i disliked very much. the acting was insulting, the diologue was silly, the story was slow, and too much of the "funny" moments were more absurd than funny. as a commentary it was great, as a movie it was poor.
Just a long string of quasi-philosophical discussions by self righteous film maker Kevin Smith. For some reason this film has become something of a cult movie in stoner circles. I suppose you'd have to be stoned to enjoy this. It would take something a hell of a lot stronger than weed to make me watch this again.
This movie had incredible dialogue, hands down. Working in the same industry, many of these conversations have come up before. Plus, the entire indie approach/feel without coming off as pretentious.
The first time i watched this i had to sneak it into my room to watch it cause i wasn't sure my parents would let me watch it, but now they're like she's seen worse.
Yes,it does look like a student's film but it's a dream/nightmare for every studio you will come upon. It's bawdy, stupendous one-liners,joint with an anarchic beauty.Too bad mr Smith never gave us another option to admire his subsequent work. One of 94's greatest.
Just watched it again last night in IFC and seems like every time I watch it, I find something that makes me appreciate it a little bit more..
My husband had me watch this movie and I loved it. Definitely my "blaze" movie if I were a stoner lol
Some of the best dialogue i've ever heard. A movie like this could have been boring if not executed correctly..the whole movie is dialogue but there isn't a boring part. A good twist on how someone at a dead end job can end up taking things for granted. Can't wait to view Kevin Smith's other films, he really has a knack for how people really talk and act, good job Kevin
A witty, and thought provoking movie with conversations about Star Wars... get out of my head Kevin Smith! :)
The original Kevin Smith movie. This movie is a classic and a must have for anyone in my generation.
Great first film for Kevin Smith. Though I still prefer Mallrats. This movie help set the continuing story of characters in the other films.
A really funny film about the people who work at convenience stores and the dumb customers you have to talk to.
It took while to get going and the acting is terrible but i guess you can excuse that because its a cast of unknowns. When it did eventually get going it was very funny and the dialogue was very good.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is definatley in my top 10, and it's just GENIUS!!! Long live Kevin Smith!!
Which did you like better? Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back?
Empire
Blasphemy!
Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets.
I feel good today, Silent Bob, we're gonna make some money, then you know what we're going to do? We're gonna go to that party, we're gonna get some pussy, and I'm gonna fuck this bitch, I'ma fuck this bitch, I'll fuck ANYTHING THAT MOVES! Yo, what the fuck you lookin' at, I'll kick your fuckin' ass! Shit yeah. Doesn't that fucker owe me 10 bucks? You know, fuckin' tonight, we're gonna rip off this fucker's head, and take out his fuckin' soul. Remind me if he tries to buy something, I'm gonna shit in the motherfucker's bag. Hey, what's up baby? What's up, sluts?
spawned the start of the most awful comedy duo in history, god damn this film was pretty comical mind
If the disgruntled, adolescent, group sub-conscious of the 90's had a vocabulary and ability to emote this would be the movie it would write. Kevin Smith immediately came on the scene as a master of dialogue. Sure it's dirty, but that doesn't make it unintelligent.

MightyShort, you're a terrible, terrible person! "its black and white!" oh my god!hahah
Seminal? Christ. Think for yourselves, folks, and don't just agree with whatever pot-smoking morons happen to dribble their opinions.
This clumsy and embarrassing student film doesn't have a single worthwhile idea. "People who work in shops are bored!" God, really? Get this man a Nobel Peace Prize.
The acting is horrifying. The direction is half-assed. Also, the dialogue is the worst I have *ever* heard. Humans do not talk like that.
It's black and white! It has words like "Catharsis" against black screens! Like, we make Star Wars jokes too! Well it *must* be a work of genius, then...
Sex jokes + Star Wars jokes / Drugs jokes, Repeat. A formula for a career.
