Plot: An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loophole and re-enter Heaven.
Not the funniest thing I've ever seen but still it has its moments, even if some scenes were a little too OTT. The cast did a great job, and I did love the little references to John Hughs, which I know Smith did in love. I also thought some of the points about religion made in this film were pretty strong, but there were still a few things which didn't sit right with me. Overall not bad, worth a watch at least once.
Dogma is firmly rooted in Kevin Smith's View Askew world so fans of his other films will not be disappointed. However, it also expands on the direction he took in Chasing Amy by dealing with subject matter and concepts that are personal and thought provoking. Dogma goes beyond the "dick and fart jokes", which are reassuringly present, and gives the viewer something to think about.
The film deals with thoughts on religion, Catholicism mainly, in a way that pokes fun at the institution but does not deride it. Dogma is by no stretch of the imagination an anti-Catholic movie. It embraces religion and points out the potential and actual problems that can occur within any religious institution. The film's comments and contents are definitely meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
The cast is great and there are many instances of hilarious viewing, usually Jay and Silent Bob, as well as very sensitive and expressive moments from the various actors.
In the end, Dogma is a thoroughly fun and thoughtful viewing experience that both old and new fans will enjoy. A movie outside the typical fare that is worth spending your money on seeing.
Great casting, as the acting was great in the movie. Cept the main character, Linda Fiorentino. She had her moments but was mostly weak.
El tipo de peliculas que se burla de todo sin llegar a ser estúpida. La historia está buena, tiene sus partes graciosas, y cuenta con un muy buen reparto.
One of Kevin Smith's worst but still its funny.Great cast and I couldn't stop laughing at the Jesus Statue.
I give these people points for throwing all sense of reality out the window when they made this movie.
The best thing about it was that you couldn't predict anything because nothing worked on the same rules and principles as in 'the real world'. Yet it was still intelligent and very entertaining.
Loved every bizzare moment in this strange story.
It was however dissapointing to actually see 'God' herself, this movie would have benifited leaving it to the imagination.
Kevin Smith's opinioin on God is pretty much the same as mine. This movie was great. Not because of the humor, just because it put my mind in a different perspective
An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is enlisted to prevent two angels from reentering Heaven and thus undoing the fabric of the universe. Along the way, she is aided by two prophets, Jay and Silent Bob. With the help of Rufus, the 13th Apostle, they must stop those who stand in their way and prevent the angels from entering Heaven.
This is the second time I got myself immersed in the world of writer/director Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse (the first one being Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back) and in my opinion it got a whole lot better the second time around. Jay and Silent Bob was funny but in the weirdest of ways. It seemed like they were just resorting to Jay's cussing and bad mouthing to make the audience laugh. But the toilet humor can be funny on a certain extent. It can't work all the time that's why I'm in the middle when it comes to Jay and Silent Bob.
But that is not the case here, Dogma on the other hand, had all the perfect laughs and offending humor with perfect timing. Even at the start of the film, I mean the very start with the disclaimer, oh man that was hilarious with Kevin Smith's fetish for platypuses and the aforementioned warning with the offensive tone of the film. Kevin Smith is a writing genius no questions asked. He knew his film would be torched by religious sects and fanatics so before they even got to it, he made his move with the disclaimer.
The funniest scene has got to be the part where a naked Chris Rock just fell out of nowhere and then Jay says "Beautiful, naked, big-titted women just don't fall out of the sky, you know" oh man that was classic. But that's not all, almost every scene with the dynamic duo was a blast and Chris Rock's too.
Therefore, I give Dogma a 4.5/5
No one wears wings better than my future husband, Alan Rickman. It looked like they had a blast filming this work. Great cast!
Oh wow, this film was amazing. A stellar cast. Atheists and theists alike (with a sense of humor) will love this humor.
This was pretty funny in some places. The main character though, Bethany, was annoying. I liked that George Carlin was in it... and was a religious guy... that was funny. I didn't like how sometimes they would be talking about boring religious stuff for a bit too long though... That was boring.
It was pretty funny in some places though. I didn't like God either. She was annoying.
One of the best ensemble cast ever. One of Affleck's best performances as a psycho-angel. Of course, Hayek is hot!
SO incredibly funny, as always Kevin Smith does a great job in developing characters, an unusual but new and different storyline that's just so incredibly funny good luck trying to catch your breath!
Dogma is arguably Kevin Smith's best movie to date. The storyline, as silly as it is, does raise a few interesting questions at religion in general. But overall its a Kevin Smith movie, expect gags and long talky scenes, however brilliant to watch.
There was a time when I thought Kevin Smith movies were funny - well written, cynically snappy, and ahead of their time. I realize now that I was drunk during this time. This movie is tripe.
Alongside Clerks and Chasing Amy, this is probably Kevin Smith's best movie ever! Jay and Silent Bob r hilarious in this one, and so is Alan Rickman. I can't believe i didnt see it earlier...
im not found of matt damon nor ben affleck. for me they can completly ruin any film only for 1 sec infront of the cam
Although not Kevin Smith's best in my opinion, I still liked this movie, and would watch it anytime I can catch it on TV.
Irreverent and dark humored movie about how a loophole in the church's rule could destroy the universe. plus all the fun that a good road trip has while fending off evil minions.
This movie is so funny! It's too irreverent to ever really be offensive, but Matt Damon is awesome in this.
I liked this. A great story and although it wasn't very smooth in the telling it had some great ideas and played out nicely for my sense of humour.
Good stuff.
Love it - it's hilarious! 'Consequences, schmonsequences!' The cinematics weren't that fab but the story had a great twist and I love the dialogue. Alan Rickman was awesome, his skills are supreme.
Hilariously crazy. The presense of best friend Matt actually makes Ben a decent actor and pretty much everything about this great mess of jokes and faith is somewhat brilliant. I had a great time.
