MCT:October 5, 2008An Excellent film, did it happen or had he lost his mind. Jake Gyllenhall is great in this.

MCT:October 5, 2008I added 1/2 a star for the 'Tears For Fears' song 'Head Over Heels'. Minus 1/2 a star for a very slow buildup of the story. Lots of big names: Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain), Jena Malone (The Ruins), Maggie Gyllenhaal (WTC), Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle (ER), Patrick Swayze, Seth Rogan (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin). Phew! I reckon the director Richard Kelly must smoke the same stuff as David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick (but not as much). Show didn't make sense.

Ultimately a more complex/ interesting teen love story. Definitely makes you think throughout and I guarantee you will have to watch it more than one to understand all the clues.

This is the deepest, darkest, most powerful movie I have ever seen. There is just no way possible to describe this movie. Its so dark, so disterbing on so many levels.
Its the only film that if you do not watch it til' the very end, you will be sucked into oblivion and your mind will be lost forever. The actual thought that had to go into thinking of the idea of this movie is just so amazing and mind-bodling. I don't think I will be able to write enough about this movie. The direction this movie has and the pure thought is just amazing. I have to give major props to the director, to be able to write and direct with a mind-set that he had is outstanding. The casting couldn't have been better. You cannot get over the acting in this film. I did not think for one second that anybody in this was acting, I thought that each person was the character. I'm going to compare Jake Gyllenhaal performance to Heath Ledgers Joker in the Dark Knight. He sucked me into his Character and really made me think that his character was dark, demented, and just losing his mind. In ways he is like me. You think that his Character might just be the only one who knows the fate of the world and he is the specially chosen one to tell or keep to himself the horrible tragedy that was going to happen. The ending is just so out of the ordinarry and so random and uncoming that you just have to sit back and tell yourself, WTF?. Then you let it sink in for a second and you relize what just happened and relize the thought that had to be put into what you just saw. I mean it was amazing. The whole movie goes together. Not one scene is forgettable and all scenes are crucial to the plot of the movie. Now I saw the Director's Cut so I don't know what they cut in the regular but I have to say that every scene in this to me was important and just kept me sucked into what was going on. In my mind this film has two plots then slowly and greatly comes together to form one. I will never get over this film and I don't understand how anybody cannot like this movie. It was perfect. Well I do know I think who don't like it, and no offence to them but they just didn't get it. Its a dark movie with so much to offer that I just want everybody to see it.
I do not want to see S. Darko which will completely soil the wonderful movie this is. Anybody participated in that movie is against this beautiful work of art and I just don't want to see that. The guys who wrote it have said that they didn't like this film and that they will make theirs different. Well as far as im concerned, they can go fuck eachother until their dicks fall of and bleed to death (sorry for that).

it was kinda good, but pretty confusing...i had to look the movie up on wikipedia afterwards so i could understand everything...i'm still a lil confused. i LOVE the song they play at the end, "mad world" by gary jules.
the movie is so haunting & creepy but beautiful at the end...all in all an engaging, original psychological thriller. -

Everyone says you have to watch closely to understand it, but I think I watched too closely, and was disappointed when there wasn't more to get. Going to the website explained a lot and was fun. Still a great movie.

This movie was great. It's not my typical type of movie, but it has a great cast and it's not a typical sugar-coated drama, it's down-to-earth and a little dark, which is refreshing.

Well acted, but the time-travel storyline kinda turned me off. As they always do. Because no one can do it right. Edit - I have rewatched this movie since I originally reviewed it and it has grown on me. The creepy factor of Frank the Bunny is worth boosting the stars.

Donnie Darko es una de esas peliculas que no la entiendes muy bien a la primera y aun asi te encanta, presenta muchas cosas interezantes en el guion; Jake Gyllenhaal es perfecto para el papel, la pelicula te hace pensar y la interpretacion que le des probablemente no sea la correcta pero es acertada y valida, lol. Tiene cosas tan raras que facilmente se convirtio en una pelicula de culto obligada de este milenio.

The world is going to end in a little more than twenty-eight days. Donnie Darko knows this because Frank, the human-sized rabbit he hallucinates, told him so. Donnie Darko is the provocative new movie from first time writer/director Richard Kelly. This movie defies any normal sense of categorization. It has elements of teen comedy, wicked satire, horror, suspense, science fiction, and various other genres all colliding into one, bizarre, compelling, and very watchable movie. The year is 1988, and the Darko family lives in the midst of suburban Middlesex. Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy, October Sky) is troubled. He is schizophrenic, not taking his medication, and up to this point, is prone to antisocial behavior and sleepwalking. This all changes when a jet engine crashes into the Darko residence. The only problem is that no commercial airliner is missing an engine. The Darkos world is turned upside-down, foreshadowing even greater events for Middlesex.
Donnie Darko is so fascinating because there is no point in the film where it is clear where Kelly is going. One moment, he will have the characters vigorously discussing the sexual habits of Smurfs, the next moment he will have other talking about the wormholes and the possibility of time travel. Time travel does figure prominently in the story, although its actual implications emerge later in the film. The beginning of the film deals with Donnie, and his efforts to comprehend Frank's message. Frank also compels Donnie to act in odd ways, causing acts of strange acts of vandalism. Aside from his mental problems and violent tendencies, Donnie is different frpm other kids. He can see beyond the superficial, and possesses the ability to think. That's why he vehemently dislikes his teacher Kittie Farmer (Beth Grant, Rock Star, Pearl Harbor) and her blind adoration of self-help guru Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze, Get Bruce, Black Dog), who partitions the world into love and fear. As the purported end of the world nears, Donnie's condition worsens. His hallucinations are more vivid, and his actions more dangerous. He is either on the verge of losing his mind or on the breakthrough of some grand epiphany.
Gyllenhaal lends a chilling performance to the film. His face exudes that of innocence, so when he looks menacingly into the camera, it is truly eerie. Watching him with his head bowed, eyes looking up and holding an axe is just great. He combines the varied emotions of rage, loneliness, and angst into a good portrayal of one messed up kid. It seems that Darko's only anchor to the real world is his girlfriend Gretchen Ross (Jena Malone, For Love of the Game, Stepmom). Maybe because she's new to town, she accepts Donnie and all his eccentricities. Kelly's oddball story gets away with much. Come on, a life-sized talking bunny? By combining such disparate elements, he keeps the viewer on edge. Nobody knows what to expect next. The purpose of the Cunningham character, aside from poking fun at self-esteem, is almost purely for laughs. He contrasts some very funny humor with excessively dark imagery, and it works. Kelly also refuses to talk down to the audience. He throws in some heady concepts with minimal explanation, expecting the viewer to know what he is talking about. The ending may let some people down, but overall, Donnie Darko is an unsetting, highly original movie that deserves a look. -

Hooray! an artfilm for the MTV generation. A movie that mimes deepness but never really achieves it. Calling this flawless or genius proves to be one huge overstatement.

A film that is often cast aside by people as a 'teen cult' flick, Donnie Darko is set in the late 80's and is excellently made and you actually feel like it's in the 80's. It has an eerie, surreal mood throughout the movie and keeps you wondering what's going on all the way through it.

A friend of mine introduced this movie to me. After seeing it once, I went out and bought it. Very original and an awesome cast. I recommended it to all of my friends.
