Would have been better except I had a hard time getting attached to any of the characters. The visuals were pretty good and the way it was narrated was unusual. Good but not great.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, is a haunting, poetic yet lengthy film. Based on the life of the 19th Century American outlaw Jesse James.
Casey Affleck is mind-blowing, he has definitley made his mark as a serious actor (I think we now know who is more talented of the Affleck brothers). He incredibly portrays every inch of his characters complexity and obsession, worthy of his Oscar nomination. Brad Pitt barely has to do anything, his presence on screen is enough to prove he is more than just a pretty face. Sam Rockwell is also a standout, a very underrated actor. The rest of the cast give stellar performances including Jeremy Renner, Sam Shephard and Paul Schneider.
The cinematography and score add brilliantly to it's haunting atmosphere. The dialogue and direction are marvellous, the unusual colour it was filmed in only make the film more beautiful.
Do not be put off by the long running time, it only makes you pay more attention to detail.
This is great storytelling, driven by astounding performances, do not miss this.

Lush scenery and a leisurely pace hallmark this fairly noteworthy film from director Andrew Dominik. While I certainly do not believe that either Brad Pitt or Casey Affleck are ready for a prestige picture of this caliber, neither one does much to bring down the overall quality of the movie. This is a good character study and shows how hero worship can turn to something else quite easily, and I also find it interesting how Ford is treated as a character of great complexity and questionable motivation.

Anyway, excellent discovering of this true story.

This movie was truly amazing, deep and truthful. Brilliant filmmaking and acting in my opinion. I was also surprised by how many producers there were including Ridley Scott. Apart from Atonement this was another of my favourites for the year. Casey Affleck's acting is truly great. The cinematography perfect. These bleak landscapes were captured brilliantly. And it captured the morbidity the public can have with regards to murder. The way we so easily change our minds from calling those who were murderers to heroes, and vice versa.

If you come from Edmonton, Calgary or Winnipeg, you'll like the sets- I was such a nerd pointing out the Fort Edmonton Locations! Casey Affleck proves he deserved his Oscar nomination. The music was good at times. But even Brad Pitt himself couldn't save this clunker. At almost three hours long with a whole bunch of guys that look similar and you can't figure out who did what and who is named who, the narrative drives to nowhere and dosen't pick up until the end when the inevitable finally happens! And while shot well, what was with the iris thing!? The hazzy edges bothered me to no end! And the fact we only saw one woman in close up the entire film! And she was a nude singer! What could be said about that! I could write a paper on that! So yeah unless you like Casey Aflleck and live in Edmonton... skip it!

I thought that this was a very moving film. To be honest, though I found the first few minutes a bit of a drag, but was then able to get really into the film.

I really enjoyed the music that is in the background of this music, it didn't have the brass, it just had strings and the odd piece of woodwind.

It also showed about the struggles that each character went through. The voice over was also really helpful, as it was able to give the audience more information about how the characters feel and what happened to them and the important dates that happened at that time.

Also I found that Brad Pitt id an excellent performance of creating Jesse James. The accent was brillant and the way he acted towards other characters pulled you into the story all the more.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis's music develops throughout all of the film. It gives the film different themes which makes the music change with the changes of the film

This film is incredibly slow paced and long, so people expecting an action packed gun toting western will be dissapointed. However it is beautifully shot, it has an almost dreamlike quality and every scene is almost like looking at a painting come to life. The dialect also, in places is profound and intense. Both Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck give good solid performances and do a great job at bringing these characters to life. All in all although slow and sometimes meandering this is a beautiful and fascinating insight into Jesse James and Robert Ford.

A lengthy, blurry, dream-like film that entices through a soft, steady and almost poetic tone. The Assassination of Jesse James is a film of tender progression that can often ease itself far enough into a meandering route, but somehow always comes out the better for it. The film is slow and drawn out, but retains a deep resonance through its striking themes and visual splendour. In many respects the film often feels like a mode of showcasing the talents of Roger Deakins, who weaves a visual tapestry so rich and real that it seeps into the lens, rather than be merely captured. But there is much more at the heart of this bold production; it's deliverance of the ideals of irony and hypocrisy remains a core to the film that only truly comes to the fore towards its final legs, building momentum along with the anticipation of the title act.

Affleck shines and Dominick exudes unique directing qualities, but more than anything the most impressive feat of the film is the curiosity that it retains. We know how it ends, yet we are still drawn to watch the proceedings beforehand.

Very good character studies of both Jesse James (and the coward) Robert Ford played by Casey Affleck. Both Brad Pitt & Affleck give a truly mesmerizing performance here. This part fiction part factual take on the last few years of Jesse James and his death was an interesting one, but this was totally a performance driven movie, though I will note the magnificant cinematography. I was never a big Brad Pitt fan in the past (not a hater just not a lover) but in more recent years he's been really honing his craft and I've been more and more impressed & he most certainly impressed me here.

The movie takes its sweet time to get started but once it does, it's a gem. Cassey Affleck got robbed of his Oscar buy a man that whispered for two hours. Not that NCFOM wasn't a bad movie.

I am happy to find a movie that brings Jesse James and his mob into question. It's tragic how everyone loves Jesse James so much, when he really did not commit the idealist acts people think he did. The acting in this movie is great all around. I think it's a tragic story and worth watching.

How this did not garner any more attention at last year's Oscars than it did is a question for which I fear I will never receive a satisfactory answer. The photography alone is stunningly beautiful, and the almost intimate study of these two figures from American history is engrossing. I won't attest to it's historical accuracy, although I feel it to be closer to the truth than many other tellings of this story. Fact or fiction, though, this film is mesmerizing and thought-provoking, and one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time.

At first glance, the title of this film seems ridiculous. It's too long and seems goofy, and all that usually = a crappy movie. But, in this case, the title is totally appropriate. Robert Ford was, quite literally and definitively, a coward.

Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck give admirable performances, the latter, in my opinion building on the success of Gone, Baby, Gone.

It's the nuances -- inflection, facial tics, etc -- that bring the characters to life and make the story interesting, and both men's performances make make the real men, James AND Ford both seem worthy of sympathy.

The one big flaw with the film comes in its legnth. Not the fact that it's 2 and half hours long, but the fact that it lingers too long. It should have ended with the first assertion that Robert Ford was a coward, during the play.

Still, a pretty great film, that did what great biopics should -- made me more curious about the real men, particularly Jesse James.

Teriffic film featuring solid support roles as well as a triumphant portrayal by Brad Pitt. Great irony, foreshowing and a rooted, dark meaning. Some parts seemed a little dragged on, long and a little dry. If not for this, a five-star would have been credited to this great movie.

An absolute masterpiece, and a breakthrough in western filmmaking that creates a unique experience as it captures the story of Jesse James poetically and intricately. Every single shot in the film is gorgeous in it's own way, providing the audience with intriguing dream-like images throughout the entire film, and truly capturing the raw and natural beauty of western civilization. Although the narration seems to be critisized by some, and is believed to tell the audience what they can already see, I believe it does an excellent job of creating a story-like atmosphere wich is entirely necessary in the context of the film. We are watching a movie that is presenting the life of Jesse James in the format of a past-tense story, although the narration is not boring and does not have a Discovery Network blandness to it. It rather suits the content and is full of depth. Every scene is given the perfect amount of time that allows the audience to study all of the characters thoughts and emotions, it allows every single stare to be taken into account and examined fully. Andrew Dominik has complete faith in his actors to explore the characters intently with silence and gestures. Every single performance is impressive, beginning with Brad Pitt's complete embodiment of a mysterious, terrifying man and Pitt's every single small mannerism communicates to the audience more than any dialogue. Casey Affleck's portrayol of a neurotic and obsessive coward is entirely natural and subtly creepy. Every single small role is played perfectly as well, with honourable mentions to Paul Schneider, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner and Mary-Louise Parker. A perfect western that rises above the generally action-packed genre and studies a complex man on a quiet yet epic scale. A truly brilliant film that allowed every detail necessary to explore the tale in its fullness and stylistically portrays the story as a true piece of art.

For some reason I didn't like the film much, I loved the camera work and Brad Pitt's acting, but something was just missing. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood...

the film was a bit long, but I ended up really enjoying it. It showed what Jesse James was really like and I thought that was great. and it also showed why Ford killed him. It was a great story and I ended up liking Robert Ford in the end and really feeling sorry for him.

Considering who jesse james was, what he did, then it's apparent that he was the coward and Robert Ford was an honorable man! I hope this movie doesn't turn into a revisionist history piece of garbage.

I hate brad pitt! Why did they choose him for this roll? He is so damned overated!

I thought this film was good, but a bit lengthy. It was however a beautiful film, and a fantastic character study.

A wonderful art Western that strolls leisurely to its inevitable outcome, as the title suggests. When Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), joins the infamous James gang, we know that he will one day kill one of the most infamous criminals of the 19th century, Jesse James (Brad Pitt). The film fills in the details, showing us the reasons why Robert Ford did what he did on that significant day. Director Andrew Dominik's take on history has a homoerotic subtext suggesting Ford killed what he couldn't have. Pitt is understated and intimidating as Jesse James and Affleck is perfect as Ford, an annoying celebrity obsessed boy. A daring script, excellent performances and spectacular photography make this film a work of art.
