<< "You see, madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little...push" >>
The Dark Knight continues the legacy of Batman. Based a year after his encounter with Ra's Al Ghul and his thugs, the streets remain the same and Batman continues to do what he can with the help of newly appointed Commissioner, Jim Gordon and Gotham's new D.A, Harvey Dent. Before long a menacing madman called the Joker introduces something into Gotham that no one would have ever expected.
This is no doubt the hundredth review you have read on this film, massively hyped for years by fans and recently by the general public, reviews have been pouring in by the bucket load...my review is simply just a reminder, from both an obsessed fan and a general moviegoer, that this film is beyond anyone's expectations, especially mine and that it simply...is...outstanding.
Everything about the first film is simply raised in level here, both in quality, complexity and story; everything seems to be in a new direction, yet never forgetting what made Begins so great. Christopher Nolan has always been one of my favorite directors and he has simply proved it here by a mile. To many it might appear flashy that he has taken hold of the newest technology for the film with IMAX cameras etc and in the wrong hands it would have just been for show, but Nolan is god behind these cameras and the sweeping, epic scope is deftly handled and perfectly assured, the man is long overdue to be recognized more...and Wally Pfeister once again, dazzles with his thoughtful tone on this epic scale, it adds such a lovely feel.
The Nolan brother's screenplay is simply remarkable and again, 'beyond' everything I expected from the film. I was one of the men who knew the film was going to be more than just a Batman film, the footage I saw showed it, the dialogue rang true of it and as I am no doubt repeating in this review, it's more than you would ever expect. In Batman 89, the problem that fell on it was the fact that the storytelling was lax and extremely second-rate, while the Joker became a first rate character over Batman, who simply became third rate. Begins proved that Batman and Bruce Wayne can be powerful forces and complex humans and faces and TDK continues that power by delving that much deeper into the complexities of human emotions and morals. Morally complex from every angle, it's a perfect crime saga under the superhero cover. Each character is given special treatment and in one word, a 'soul'. Bruce Wayne must now face the facts of Rachael being with another man, especially the one appointed as the challenger to Batman's moral values on Gotham. Harvey Dent is seen as the 'White Knight' of Gotham, a man without a mask who is ridding the streets of Gotham of its criminals. Batman has to make that choice on where he stands in Gotham and where exactly his morals have taken him, especially when revenge, the one thing he has pushed himself away from doing, lingers so close. That there is the simplistic overview of the films elements, it delves so much deeper. The Joker is also never given a major origin story and thank god for that, because the direction of Nolan's vision didn't need it. He's unrelenting, mysterious much like Batman yet so self destructive and simply one hell of a scary, menacing clown that promises anarchy and chaos...and that he delivers.
I can't go on without mentioning something highly under-looked in films...the score. It is the first soundtrack I would have ever bothered to sit down and listen to throughout and for good reason. Its a rich force that blends beautifully with the complexities of the films morals and emotions, beautifully adding richness to every epic scene on screen, its up there as one of the greatest pieces of music I've heard that can add so much to the moving image.
You all knew I was getting to this...the performances. Christian Bale once again proves to be the greatest mix put on screen for these characters and has settled in nicely. As Bruce Wayne, he continues to show the charming and cheeky wit around the way he is seen in city, yet he remains so human, dark, and troubled and battles the strong emotions with others as we all do. Aaron Eckhart simply blew me away, especially when everyone is going in for Heath. He's perfect...there I said it and easily blows Tommy Lee off the face (no pun intended) of the earth. He's got the perfect charisma to play this all American man as D.A of a major city and really is a nice threat for Bruce in his personal life, because he is not only similar in statue as the force of Gotham, but he has won Rachael over, who no doubt sees him as Bruce without the mask...and when Harvey changes into who he is destined to become, Aaron is scary as hell and really is compelling and chilling. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a great replacement over the horribly sub-par Katie Holmes and is given much more to work with this time around and she blends in just well, showing an intimidating streak where need as her character should....AND of course Heath Ledger. What more can I say that no one has already said? Many still believe a posthumous Oscar win would be a sympathy vote; the truth is, if anyone said that, they deserve no audience. If the man was still alive today, he would wipe the supporting field for what is quite possibly the greatest villain to ever grace celluloid...and that will be argued. Equally unexpected and expecting, his performance as the Joker will stand for a lifetime. Sure Cesar and Jack will always have a face for Joker as the showman side of the character, but Heath is the dark side everyone knows from a 50+ year old character. Charismatic, dark, edgy and scary as all fucking hell, he breezes into every scene easily stealing it and delivering something so intense, so unexpected, yet so real. It?s a performance to be remembered by someone who died so suddenly and whether or not he wins the truly deserved Oscar, he's already in the hall of fame in my eyes.
The Dark Knight is a fucking masterpiece. This is, of course an 'opinion', because no one can stand as being right, it is up there as one of the greatest films I have ever seen and blew my obsessive and very high expectations right out of the water. Moral complex, beautifully captured, deftly controlled, greatly performed...all the elements I look for in a film, put to near perfection. I still can't say that the film is 'flawless' and I ain't going to nitpick at what those flaws are, but The Dark Knight comes so damn close...and being a film so deserving of everything it gets and a film of such exquisite quality and somehow managing to beat my insane expectations, it comes so daringly close for me...as perfect.
98/100

I had high hopes from this movie since Batman is my childhood hero like many others. But this movie is very different from comic strip. Joker was never a phycho, Batman never talked in a fake voice. So overall disappointing.
aweome...great movie and heath...damm why did u have to die pal?? great performing by heath in guason
After the movie ended and the credits started I had to do everything I could to keep myself from standing and clapping and giving Ledger and his performance the attention and respect that it so very much deserves. His biggest accomplishment ever and sadly he will be missed. He plays the best of the worst like no other. The best Batman film yet. They have set such extremely high expectations for movies to come. The explosions, special effects and mind blowing action make the two and a half hours sit worth ever second. I have nothing but great things to say about this film. If you haven't seen this in theatres you need to. You won't regret it and it's worth the price of any admission.
It was one of the best films i have ever seen!!!
Also Heath Ledgers joker was amazing!
No one could beat his performance, it had me hooked!
I went and saw it 6 times in the cinema and it had me going 'why so serious' for months :D
Brilliant!!!!!!
Well I didnt see it from the vary beginning so i didnt really get it but from what i saw it was pretty good!
I actually kind of wish there was a score between 5 and 4.5. But this will do. I only say that because the beginning was a little slow for me. BUT. After it picked up it was FUCKING INCREDIBLE.
The Dark Knight is the sequal of "Batman Begins", the whole story in this movie is about Batman and his allies. As the Joker (Ledger) has terrorized the streets of Gotham the people in it have gone scared, Bruce Wayne a.k.a Batman (Bale) and his cop friend Gordon (Oldman) and the new DA Harvey Dent (Eckhart) have created an interest for capturing the Joker. The Joker turns all crocks against them and chaos reaches the streets as Batman is responsible for the inocent lives taken by the Joker... This movie is very dark, I LOVED Ledger in this movie (may him rest in peace) and couldnt stop looking facinated at him! I liked Joker more than Batman, great acting and for me it didnt matter that Maggie Gyllenhaal took over the role as Rachel, she did good and this movie turned out great!
One of the most disappointing films in history. With all the hype that surrounded this, you expected something fantastic. If you went in thinking this, you were sadly mistaken. The story, first off was so weak and it absolutely went nowhere. The acting was also terrible. And when I say terrible I mean FUCKING DREADFUL. The Bale performance was lifeless, Eckhart just overacted completely through the course of the movie, and with Gyllenhaal's character, you just want to hit her in the face with a shovel. However, there is a reason this movie should be seen, and that reason is Heath Ledger. His performance so so mind-boggling and so complex that you wonder how he is able to make such a unique and twisted character. He is the ONLY reason this film is worth seeing. Other than that, it is just complete, incoherent nonsense.
ohmygodddd. I've watched this movie 3 times! It's so amazing! The whole concept of good verses evil and what is right and wrong. Every single actor/actress did an amazing job.
I have not seen it yet, want to watch it on video, as it is the last that heath ledger ever made, so sad.
By now, more talented review writers have probably already said everything that could possibly be said about how incredible this movie is. The only thing that I will add is that in one scene it seemed like the writers were setting up for the Joker to possibly reappear in later Batman movies, which tears my heart.
At first i thought it would be stupid but after I watched a half hour of it, it became really good and I couldn't look away.
Superb. BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER.
Until the next one I see.
Oh, and this really shouldn't be dismissed as a footnote, but ------Heath Ledger was INCREDIBLE in this movie. Yes, there was hype. Yes, there was a curiosity factor. But whatever reason you watched this movie, you had to be fixated on Ledger. This movie really should have been called The Joker - a Batman movie, because Ledger took over from the opening moments. He WAS the movie. As great as everything else was in this movie, and it was almost all perfect, to me, Ledger stole the show. Saying it is a shame about what happened to him is tired, and cliched - it's bad whenever that happens to someone. But, as far as this role goes, it is just too damn bad we will never get to see him reprise this role. For Ledger, this was his 9th symphony (yes, I stole that from Iron Man).
It might have been my utter dislike for comic characters, but this movie was nothing spectacular for my personal taste. Some great abilities from the actors involved, but not my cup of tea.
a great movie... really like Heath as the joker! well, no words i can describe abt dis movie... probably amazing & very long!
What can I say about this movie? It kicked ass. So much better than the first. The Joker is by far the best part of the movie. Totally. Heath Ledger just knocked it out of the park with this role. He made the Joker quite funny and just plane creepy at the same time. Awesome.
I went to see the Dark Knight expecting to see a good movie. Instead, I saw an AWESOME movie. The plot, acting special effects, all of it was amazing.
Bra film, positivt överaskad! Inte en vanlig superhjältefilm. Min första Batman-upplevelse. Borde nog se den igen ändå
A wonderful Christopher Nolan movie with an awesome plot and twists. Heath Ledger late, deserves the best supporting actor Academy Award. Loved his acting. He was so into it. Wonderful movie.
AMAZING! heath ledger may he rest in peace becuase he just made the best joker in the fucking world no one could of done it better NO ONE! and it showed how he really is he dosnt care about money or love just chaos.... its say he mixed the joker with sid vicious and ted bundy and charlse manson and thought about those three for one full month living alone in a hotell with the make up on....thats fucking amazing and to be honest...the film would not of been as good without him im sorry but it truly wouldnt have... speaking of sid...gary oldman.... no one dose better then him as gordon he looks sounds and feels the role!
Saw the IMAX version with the wife. Normally we don't enjoy the same films, but she really got into this one. It's a shame Leger kicked the bucket. He was actually alright in this one.
I give it a perfect score because of minimal use of CG - great stunts and cinematography.
Completely blew me away! Few movies have ever had me hooked from the first 5 minutes into it, but I was sold almost immediately.
First off I want to comment on the role everyone wants to know about. Heath Ledger as The Joker. He surppasses every Joker before him, he makes all the Joker's before him look like just plain clowns ,not insane genuis madmen and Ledger brought him to life with perfection and is completely disappeared behind the role.
But he isn't the only noteworthy performance, Eckhart also was very impressive and when it was his turn to change, he did so with the ease of flipping a coin.
I also continue to enjoy Caine's Alfed, because he fits the role so well and adds heart and humor to a dark film.
Bale also shines as Batman/Wayne, and I liked him best when he's not wearing the mask.
Freeman, Gyllenhaal, and Oldman also give great performances and completely disappear behind their characters and just become them.
The story is multilayered and fantastic. The twist and turns throughout the entire movie leave you guessing what will happen and the film captures that insanity well, making the first hour of the film go by like that.
Though I have to be honest, I wasen't happy with the way it ended and I hate giving any of it away. It just seemed to be to complicated of a moral choice and kinda of a moment killing way to end the movie. If it had ended with the scene with the ferries then it would have been perfect.
Still it's satisfying sequel for fans that will leave you with plenty of questions about good and evil, but the one that will ring in your head the most will be The Joker's manical laughter and "Why So Serious?"
"You are just a freak, like me! "

tis film is one of the main reasons that this has been one of the best years to be a comic fan.i dont like people judging this movie just on heath ledger's performance(which is amazing by the way). there is more to this movie. the story is excellent as it reflects today's society.this goes against a major argument against superhero's "I cant relate to them". this movie makes it very asy to relate. it alos doesn't paint batman as a saint which is good, he is a necessary force in gotham. also interesting to see him try to save the day in daylight as bruce wayne.amazing movie.
heath ledger just left a legacy which will be hard to break for anyone trying to play the villain. His sadistic and creepy twist to the movie just made it genius...and the whole two face drama is worth every penny. Christian Bale and his fantastic cast really pulled it off. And I really respect the fact that they did not kill off the joker but left him hanging in the air to show that the joker still lives..viva for ever
OMG!!!! This movie was really good. I'm obsessed with Batman. My other fave batman movie was the one with the riddler (jim carrey). That was soooo funny. Did anyone here that Johnny Depp might be doing the new Riddler??? He won't replace Jim but he will do a good job.
