A really good movie with lots of memorable scenes. I have seen this movie parodied a lot in other stuff, and am glad to have seen the original and where it all came from. Very good acting by Mr. Nicholson.

I saw this movie when it first came out and has creeped me out about big hotels ever since. In fact, after the first time I saw it I turned on every single light in the house.
    Two words: Creepy twins.
Despite all of this I do look forward to when i can afford to stay at The Stanley Hotel for a weekend.
Also I stayed at a potentially haunted hotel in Fall City NE that reminded everyone in my band of the Overlook hotel...very creepy place and cheaper than the Stanley.

Med tanke på att jack Nicholson spelade jokern så bra i batman så tycker jag att han överträffade sig själv i den här filmen.

Very well done though it is weird. Definite King story in the vain of others he has done like the new 1408. Jack Nicholson performs very well and carries the film especially by the end. Kubrick's film style is unique and equisite here with his selected shots and cinematography which enhance the story all the more.

There are two simple things that should help you realize why this is a great horror film: No loud booming noises and everything is shown in bright light. Yes, Kubrick breaks a golden rule of the genre by showing everything instead of hidding it in the shadows. It makes sense that many people back then, and even today, seem to dismiss this so easily. It works on a whole different level (and works well mind you) than all the crap of horror films of these days where we see the same type of scenes repeating over and over. Plus, exposed the horrors of furries years before the internet.

Another overrated movie, for who I don't understand the huge love.
    But not toooo bad.
Anyway, poor Stephen King, who agrees with me, when it's the worst of the 90 adaptations of his books, according to him.
And the best is also the best for me, The Green Mile. So, Mr. King and I have the same tastes about the movies made from his stories.
    Proud of it!

I kinda thought it missed the supernatural edge of the novel, so I can't give it top ratings. But it wasn't awful.

I'm going to start this review by saying yes, I have read the book it's based on and I do know the book and film go down two not too different paths to reach the end. That doesn't bother me. And that's how good this movie is. The alcohol metaphors being discarded for the movie I don't mind. The ending not being anything like the book works well for this film.

When Stephen King saw this movie, one of his biggest complaints was that with the casting of Jack Nicholson, the audience would guess he would go crazy and the film wasn't helped by the fact that most of the character traits didn't make it to the film and most of the backstory was left behind. But I'm fine with that because Nicholson does crazy really well and there's a great intensity when he finally gives in to the madness.
Even when he isn't fully insane, he comes across as menacing and off putting, especially when talking to his wife. Because of that, the ending wouldn't have made as much sense if the film were to use the novel's ending. Hence the need to come up with something else

(Below there are spoilers so if you haven't seen this film and still wish to, please skip ahead)

In the novel, Jack Torrence regains his sanity momentarily and it's enough to get his family and the caretaker to safety while he destroys the hotel. Thus, he dies a hero.

But because in the movie he comes across as someone who, even when not under the hotel's influence, is indifferent to his wife and son, this ending would not suffice. Instead, his wife and son get away from the hotel while he remains in the hedge maze and freezes to death, with the final shot showing him in photo with other hotel patrons dated in the 1920's.

Now even though I like both endings, I prefer this one because it implies the hotel has been doing this for some time and that Jack Torrence is merely the latest person to "join" the hotel's "guests". Whether or not Jack is a reincarnation of the previous caretaker is up for debate but that's a possibility considering the "You've always been the caretaker" line and the two men with the name Grady. Perhaps the hotel is trying to seek out reincarnated former members or just corrupt whichever poor devil happens to be watching the place.

This film also contains moments of horror brilliance that have become well known and parodied over the years such as the twins talking to Danny and the blood from the elevator. Not to mention the pages with the endless sentences of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and Nicholson bursting through the door and screaming "HEEEERE'S JOHNNY!"

So yes, despite the major differences between book and film, I love both equally. The book is my favorite King book and this is my favorite horror.

stanley kubrick directs this masterpiece of modern horror based on stephen king's novel. i thought this movie was meant to be a horror movie becasue it is based on stephen king's novel and that is a horror book and when it was made into a movie i found some parts of this movie of a comdey and i didn't think this movie wasn't really that gory and not very spooky. Jack Nicholson's performance is great and one of the best i think he has done. however Shelley Duvall's performance in this film didn't impress me. Stanley Kubrick filmed this well. always enjoyable to watch.

It had been quite a while since I had seen the Shining when I sat down this summer with a few friends and a glass full of whiskey and ginger ale to review the Kubrick horror masterpiece. The range of what I had forgotten since the years of my first viewing was great. First of all, it's easy to forget how Shelley Duvall runs around the film like a skittish cat, flailing her arms and screaming like a poorly lubricated factory machine. Who would want to remember that? But more importantly, I forgot the film's basic oddness, it's beauty, and how wonderfully fucking scary it is. The Shining is pretty much the example of psychological and haunting horror. There's no killer after them, not crazy task they're trying to accomplish, no scary demons per se, simply a haunted hotel trying to drive its occupants absolutely bonkers. Needless to say, Jack Nicholson is terrifying. His slow transformation from collected writer to insane axe murderer unravels brilliantly. He taps into all of the vices of his character and lets everything come undone at a menacingly appropriate pace, and we see the pages of the script come alive in his performance. He goes right along with the film's tone which slide gradually in and out of insanity to a completely satisfying degree, right up until shits goes nuts at the end. The film climaxes in such an outstanding degree its hard to contain yourself. It's fucking scary, it's fucking weird, and it keeps us oscillating between a straight up fright for the characters and for ourselves, as the hallucinations become more prevalent and everything starts to feel just a little bit too insane. The main complaints come in with Duvall's performance and the ambiguity of their child's psychic abilities. It seems like such an add-on, a forced kind of "creepy" thing that was kept in from the adaptation of the novel but with the changes made isn't completely necessary, and fades in and out of being an important plot point to a slightly troubling degree. Of course we forget all about this until long after the wonderfully ambiguous and frightening ending, but it still hangs there. The Shining is remains a true masterpiece of horror despite its minor flaws, and a movie that can still unsettle me in the oddest way possible.

So the movie is almost 30 years old. I personally have never been a fan of old movies. I don't know what it is, but they always bore me. I think it has to do something with the fact that theres no cinematics or any good props or soemthibng. I dunno. However this movie, while slow, was still decent enough. Im glad I seen it finally but would have probably liked it more if I seen it when I was a kid.

After years of verbal abuse heaped upon me by fans of this film, I finally picked it up and watched it. It is not a slasher flick by any means. There is very little real violence beyond Jack putting an axe through Scatman's chest and Shelley Duvall clobbering Jack over the head with a ballbat with a lucky swing. It is an excellent psychological thriller and is magnificently directed by Kubrick, except for the horrible ending, which dropped it a half star just based on that. The other half star gets lost because of Shelley Duvall's miscasting. She's terrible in this movie, playing a wife who seems to already be on the edge from having been through too much before any of this happens. She has that same dumbfounded look on her face that could only come from one of two things: watching Jack eat their neighbor's shit or seeing the very disappointing ending to this almost-classic. I want the alternate endings - either of them - and then I'll post a new review.

I had waited ages to watch this! I wish I didn't. The performances were very good, but I don't think the movie was great. The book is probably better. I got confused a lot and the music was very good and scary, which made me uneasy. Also, it's very slow moving in parts.

Jack Nicholson stars in this film adaptation of Stephen Kings weird book The Shining. This is a pretty good 80's terror film that relies more on psychological fear rather than on in you'r face gore. Eye still can't get myself to believe that this is a 1980 film it has the look of an early 90's film in my opinion. For people looking for a good horror film this is worth checking out.

I see that the short version of this film has just been reissued on DVD in the UK again. What a wasted opportunity. And who cares what Stephen King thinks or doesn't think about Kubrick's "The Shining"? As far as I'm concerned, he forfeited the right to complain about lousy adaptations of his work when he directed one of the worst: "Maximum Overdrive".

Stephen King may be a talented writer, but he is an IDIOT for saying that his version of The Shinning, which aired on I believe it was the Sci-Fi Channel, is scarier than the original. He probably felt chaffed that he didn't have the artistic control over the movie, which I heard he didn't want & gave up willingly when he signed the rights to the book over to the studio, but he grew disenfranchised with it over time.

This is a MUCH scarier and better version than the thing that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel!

Amazing. Along with Clockwork Orange And 2001: Oddisey... The best of Kubrick. Different from the book, a lot. But I'm not comparing, I'm saying that, as a movie, is simply a classic, and one of the best. With Misery and It, the best movies bassed on King's movies.
