Waitress has a charm all on its own. The balance between comedy and drama has been accomplished without the traditional fancy one-liners but with more finesse of actual life performances, brilliantly performed by Keri Russell, an award nominating role and acting job. The drama is well played by Jeremy Sisto in an unsympathetic role and except for the ultimate direction Keri and Jeremy take in a somewhat oversimplified scripted episode, their relationship and performances are excellent. The lightness and the comedy that intersperse this small, intimate film about a wife burdened with a selfish husband and living a life as a waitress who loves to bake pies and discovers that she is pregnant is a meaningful film about facing up to one's responsibilities and dreams.
Honestly one of my favorite movies, its hilarious!!
"As you can plainly see, meh left boob is higher then my right"
PAN AND SCAN. / A very good movie that could have been excellent if it lasted a bit less. Keri Russell's performance is as good as the direction of Adrienne Shelly, rest in peace, alternating between drama and comedy, sentiment and satire, realism and fable with amazing ease.
Not great, could have been better, recommended to women who don't "need" men other wise, don't waste your time
I thought it was okay, i had high expectations for this movie, so i was a bit let down that it wasn't as good as i expected but i still give it 3 stars, the story was good, i liked the whole pie for each moment thing :)
Great movie. I like this story a lot. This movie was funny in a way. So funny when she goes to the doctors. The ending was really nice too. Awesome movie.
Didn't expect anything, and wasn't that good at the beginning. But then it become this awesome mix of drama und comedy. Actually I think I haven't ever seen a movie which changed from that deep sad atmosphere to laughing out loud comedy.
barely better than your standard lifetime tv movie of the week. the whole story is rather wonky, the relationships between the characters border on the macabre, and the ending leaves the overly sweet vomity taste of opportunity cost pie.
I wasn't sure if i'd like this movie or not but it wasn't too bad. I especially enjoy the way it ended.
Waitress is not a perfectly cut, factory-line Safeway-brand slice. It does, though, serve up a generous deep-dish portion, homemade and heartfelt, that leaves a sweet taste in your mouth. It has so much more going for it than what the surface suggests. Past the white picket fences and beneath the gee-willickers exterior lies a romantic comedy that leads with a passion and honesty few in the genre even bother to pursue. It's candy, but with a deliciously sour center.
Keri Russell sparkles in this story about a piemaker who longs for something more filling. Russell's performance is crisp and entertaining. She never makes the words and thoughts of her character feel disingenuous. Despite her reserved and gruff demeanor, we can see the heart of a wounded woman displayed in every scene. Though some aspects feel like a sitcom, Waitress doesn't adhere to formula or resort to clichés. It's a rare chick flick that draws us in with its wit, warmth and quirkily appealing characters. Like a healthy slice of pie, Waitress is meant to be savored.
I realize that I'm not the target audience here but I didn't identify with any of the characters and I'm not sure how you get into such a screwed up marriage in the first place and I don't think there's any justification for the Doctor to be cheating on his wife, so I didn't really like any of the characters.
some parts are ok. some parts are bad. i like the old guy, he's kinda sarcastic, witty and just fun to watch. it was kinda nice of him to leave her with that kinda money to start all over again. and at least she cared for her baby whom she didn't liked at all. the movie kinda means (for me) that a woman can go through life alone and make it alone. very empowering.
Excellent movie. I really enjoyed this. It was strange and unexpected. I loved it. Adrienne Shelly - we lost you too soon!
This unexpected comedy proves that a good script and excellent acting can make a gem out of a simple story. Simple in the sense that this is about a poor humble waitress. Yet some twist of fate makes her life anything but. So the movie's tagline says: If only life were as easy as pie.
Kerri Russell should be in every producer's mind having showcased her smart acting chops in this film. Though the movie has a well-written and multi-faceted supporting cast, Russell steals the show with her expressive eyes and amazing control. The curly-haired Felicity has matured into a truly beautiful and luminous woman. Her character Jenna is kind-hearted but unhappily married thanks to a selfish abusive husband. All she wants is to join the pie-baking contest in another town and win the $25,000 cash prize- a sure ticket to finally free herself from this co-dependency. But alas, this wish seems futile with the events that unfolded.
This quirky comedy allows Jenna to add color to her otherwise dull life by daydreaming about the pie she would make for the day. She's the pie master who names pies after her emotions or circumstances, e.g. "I Don't Want Earl's Baby" pie a.k.a. "the Bad Baby pie", the quiche fretfully invented after finding out she's pregnant. Everyday she goes to work and makes one uniquely-named pie. These narratives, complete with a cooking show-like visual of how she concocts her pies, add an amusing vibe to the movie. It saves it from immersing too much in Jenna's unfortunate situation. It's like the filmmaker is telling us not to take life too seriously. Because "miracles" happen when we least expect it.
The only sad thing about Waitress is the real-life tragedy that was the untimely death of it's writer-director Adrienne Shelly, found murdered days before the film was accepted in Sundance. Shelly also starred in the film as co-waitress and friend Dawn. This was her first and last full-length film. Her wit and talent is immortalized in this little gem of a story.
I really liked this movie. It had a lot of heart and entertaining characters. The story could have easily taken cliche turns and a predictable ending, but instead the ending reflected a more complex reality that was more relatable.
some parts of this movie is a 4 star.other parts are over the top a marginal 3 star.solid acting.good story.keri russell shines in this movie.would recommend good watch.
I was looking forward to seeing this movie since I saw the previews.......it of course fell flat.......but it had it's moments.....always loved Keri from her FELICITY days....
Waitress is a good film touching on two issues that not many movies do, very sweet film, would recommend.
Is this supposed to be considered cute?
This is not just a mockery, it's a sham...it's a SHAMOCKERY.
"I hate my husband pie" ?? The only thing worse than that is having that uttered in a hideous southern accent.
B-A-D...and frankly, it being this bad is an insult to all womenkind.
I loved how Jenna would name her pies. "I hate my husband" pie. I just love this movie. I rented it on a whim and I had to buy it. I thought it was done really well.
Let's see. We've got the stereotypical wife beater, the trailer park diner waitresses, and the nice guy doctor who offers an alternative to the wife beating, trailer parking life. The characters were way too cliched for me to be able to enjoy this film. Are there actual people in real life who act and react like the people in Waitress? I suspect not.
The pies looked delicious but the film was bland. Not horrible, just bland.
In real life, an OB doctor who has an affair with his pregnant patient is incredibly unethical. This could have cost him his medical license.
That being said, Nathan Fillion is sure easy on the eyes and I ended up liking this movie anyway. The ending was especially satisfying.
It is earnest enough to pass as a pleasant and sincere piece of work. Nothing to shout about, but never harms one's experience either.

Sweet sassy and sexy!!! like one of Jenna's pies a perfect blend of humour and conflict. Can anyone out there actually bake the pies featured in the film??? If so CONTACT me immediately.
When the movie first started it was a bit slow and taken aback by how the storyline itself was already happening so quickly to the main character. But when this movie started going it was great to watch. After watching this I found out about the tragic story and I have to say what a shame it is that we have lost such a wonderful and artistic person. She really did make her vision for this movie come to life. What happened to Adrienne Shelly is more than sad it's awful. My thoughts and prayers are with her. For the cast itself for this movie was fantastic. Keri Russell really did shine in her role. It was also great to see Andy Griffith in this along with Cheryl Hines. Nathan Fillion who is such a qt is a great actor also in this film. The rich jerk from the movie "Cluless" Jeremy Sisto did a a wonderful portrayal of being the "husband you would want to leave". My favorite part of this film was when Kerri would just randomly create various recipes for pies in her head. 4 stars
I want to see this for one reason...Jeremy Sisto. I hope it's worth my time, actually looks like it might be good. I'm being very open-minded with this movie.
